Om forumets framtid

En snabb kommentar såhär dagarna efter forumet är att i mycket och mångt var forumets framtid på mångas läppar. Jag ska skriva mer om detta framåt när jag får tid, så länge får ni hålla er till godo med ett tal av en av World Social Forums grundare, Chiko Whitaker, och hur han ser på forumets framtid.

"This forum is one of 42 forums in this year. Which never beeing decided from above, always from below.

Its a pity to see European Social Forum finishing. We saw in United States what force such a forum can have. Another world is not only possible, but absolutely necessary. This crisis shows us that it is absolutely urgent. This forum process is very new in the world, and we must use it as much as possible.

Each tools to do something has its special use. Social forum needs to give directions how to struggle, how to do. Then I thought, we cannot use the forum for this. If the forum exists to give the possibility to the civil society to organize. If we begin to use the forum to do this with actions. Forum actions, we dont do other things that are possible with social forums, namely, meeting. Meeting each other. Recognizing our movements. To learn with each other what we are doing. To overcome prejudice and experience new relations that are needed in politics. We need to change in ourselves. We need to understand the force of networks. We must exchange realities in the meeting, respecting our diversity and autonomy.

All this will not happen if we go home and not deepen our relations in the forum. We must return home to continue the discussions, if not the forum will disappear, it will only be same people with same things to say."

Hur än nästa ESF kommer att se ut, kommer det att vara annorlunda. En kort kommentar från min sida är att forumet måste bli mer levande. Det måste finnas mer kulturella inslag. Seminarierna måste komma ifrån problemanalyserandet och vara lösningsfokuserade. Seminarierna måste vara kortare. Och framförallt måste forumet vara bättre organiserat med en röd tråd och tidigare tagna kontakter med både rörelser och organisationer, så att man kommer förberedda till forumet med konkreta handlingsförslag. På något sätt är det en tredje väg, mellan polerna att göra forumet till en politisk aktör och bibehålla det som en öppen forumplats.

Det är fantastiskt att rörelser möts och lär känna varandra. Men lite som en ryska kommenterade till mig under forumet "People don´t come here to do politics, they come here to socialise, which is wonderful, but maybe it´s not enough".
